I really must take the time to thank Shirley Myall of Zeley Papillons in Williamsburg, VA for all her efforts for helping to make her D'Vine furkids excell the way she has. Her devotion to the breed and the dogs is inspiring and her love for them and theirs for her makes what we do so worth while. She has become such an important part of our family and we are so grateful to her for everything she has done. Shirley is one of those few rare people one gets to meet in their life that is full of intergrity, she is full of love and laughter and we are all better for knowing her!!

Rocky
Niki,
It is hard to believe that Rocky will be 3 years old next month!! He has just completed his 2nd year as a therapy dog at the neurological institution here. As I believe I told you, he visits with the bed ridden and wheelchair bound non verbal residents of that facility. And he never ceases to amaze me with his uncanny ability to know exactly what each of them needs from him to bring a smile to their face. A few weeks ago as we were making his rounds there, we entered one of the common areas and a favorite resident of his was in a bed right inside the door. That person was sobbing uncontrollably, a sound that almost broke my heart. Carol, the supervisor there who makes the rounds with us, said perhaps Rocky should go to someone else and then return later - but Rocky refused to walk past that person. I put him in the bed, he licked the hand that was laying there and the sobbing quieted, then stopped. We then left that person to continue with his visit to other friends, but as we were across the room, that individual began the sobbing again. The efforts of the aides there were not successful in quieting the crying, and since that friend of Rocky's is nonverbal, it was hard to tell what was wrong. When he heard the sobbing begin again, Rocky looked up at me with those little brown eyes and I could tell he wanted to return to his upset friend. I took him back and placed him in the bed. Once again he licked the hand, then just lay there and snuggled up to his sad friend. He stayed until his friend was quiet, and when he could tell that all was well stood up for me to remove him from the bed. Watching this happen, his refusal to bypass the one who was sobbing, his return when the sobbing resumed, and his laying there until somehow he knew it was OK to leave and then standing up made the trips we make for his "job" more than worthwhile. To know that he can give that kind of comfort really touches my heart. I don't know if all of the little Papillons would be good therapy dogs, but Rocky is terrific and amazing.
He also showed the same kind of instincts with his sister Missy. I told you when we talked before you let me adopt Rocky, that my sheltie Missy was getting old and I wanted to have a new puppy before I lost her. While I was expecting that Missy was near the end of her life, I didn't expect that we would also loose Windsor, the wheaton terrier. Windsor died on April 2. Missy had lost her eyesight about last Christmas, and after that happened Rocky would watch over her. If she got up to wander in the night, Rocky would wake me up so I could be sure she was safe. The week after Windsor died, Missy collapsed in the kitchen floor. A trip to the vet revealed that her heart, which we knew was deteriorating, was bad. The vet said she had a couple of weeks to a month to live. That there was not adequate blood to her brain, thus the blackouts. I was not only upset about Missy's prognosis, so soon after losing Windsor, but worried about Rocky loosing her too. The vet said to be sure that Rocky got to smell her when she went, or to bring him with us if we had to have the vet take care of her. On May 3, Rocky woke me up at 5am. Missy was up and wanted me to hold her, very unusual for her. I held her and Rocky sat with us and smelled her from her tail up to her head several times. She wanted off my lap about 7:30am and went to the kitchen to eat, but collapsed and never came out of it. 4 hours later we made that fateful trip to the vet, Jerry, Rocky, Missy and I. The vet was really good with Missy, and let Rocky say good-bye. He adjusted better than I did. The only thing he won't let me do is pick up Missy's bowl. Every time I empty it and pick it up, he goes looking for it. So I have decided it stays down. Sometimes he eats a bite out of it. He was so good to take care of her when she needed him.
Hope all is well with you, Fred, and the puppies.

Oz a television star
I wanted to let you know that Oz shot his first TV commercial this week. Who knows if he will end up in the
final cut, but he did a great job.
They had him lie in a dog bed in the kitchen. They wanted him to look relaxed so I had him lie down and put
his head down on the edge of the bed. We have been working the "head down" command and he did it perfectly.
We were amazed that he held it still while the cameraman zoomed in at him on this big trolley (the cameraman
and his big camera sit on the trolley and another man pushes the trolley around). Oz glanced at him but then
looked back to me and held himself in a perfect stay.
Later, he played with an actress (that was a huge success because getting a dog to “go visit” and look like they
are enjoying this person as their owner when, in fact, they probably just met is difficult) and took the product
from her. They were hoping he would chew it, but Oz held it in his mouth perfectly still for five minutes or so.
They loved that! Said it was the best product hold you could ask for. But, he was protecting the little bone.
(At home, since all the dogs want them, he'll only eat them in hiding.) People couldn’t believe he wasn’t drooling.
It makes me giggle to think of it, because he held it like a precious glass slipper not moving any part of his body
– just waiting for all of us to go away so he could eat the darn thing! Other dogs had to do the chewing scene.
He was also in a shot with four other dogs. They put them from largest (179 lb Great Dane) to smallest (5.5 lb Oz)
and he was a perfect angel, never moved and never looked at the other dogs. He really seemed to enjoy himself.
On all his breaks, he ran from crew member to crew member giving kisses and getting petted.
My next plan is to get him certified as a therapy dog. He and I did a class for some seniors last year and they
loved him. He and my Border Collie, Rain, were demonstrating agility for the class (it was a class on dog health
and training) and while Rain worked, the seniors passed Oz from lap to lap. He loved that!
Among his other talents, Oz has learned to push things with his nose, roll a spool with his front paws while
his back paws walk along behind, he gets 3 paws on a skate board and is learning to push himself with the 4th paw.
He speaks, growls, rolls over, dances, places his foot on things and holds it. He has learned to look in specific
directions (a hard one to teach) and is now learning to pull things open with his teeth.
He continues to be a wonderful, intelligent dog. I’m glad that he needs interesting things to do, because
together we are entering new worlds that I would never have experienced without him being in my life.
Take care, Sue
We are so proud of Oz and especially pleased with all the dedication and love Sue has given this little fella.
The effort she has put forth to train Oz to be his best is nothing short of amazing and we are so grateful he has
been able to have someone that can bring out in him all his special qualities. Love, patience and her time has
been well spent and we are happy for her and especially for Oz. I wish them both the best and cannot wait to hear
what is up with these two stars next!!

Oz has the following titles after his name: D’Vine’s Wizard of Oz, OA, OAJ, NAC, NGC, NJC.
Translation for non-agility folks. In AKC agility, Oz has won his Novice Agility, Novice Agility Jumpers,
Open Agility, and Open Agility Jumpers. He won each with a score of 100. In his first Novice Standard run,
he was over 30 seconds under time.
In NADAC (North American Dog Agility Council), he has won his Novice titles for Standard, Gamblers, and Jumpers.
In USDAA, he has 2 legs towards his Performance 1 Standard title, 2 legs towards his Performance 1 Snooker title,
and 1 leg towards his Performance 1 Jumpers title.
He has done all of this in 8 trials (3 for AKC, 3 for NADAC, and 2 USDAA).

Lisa Naert and Kristi Murray of MI are the proud owners of "Evie" , we are proud of all 3 of them!
Spirit and Jann attended their first agility trial this weekend (2-16-05).
Saturday she received a 2nd place and qualifying score in Novice A Standard.
Sunday she wowed them with a perfect score of 100 and a 1st place in Novice A Jumpers!!!
Her time was 10-13 seconds under the time limit. That gives Spirit 2 of her 3 "legs" needed
for her agility title IN HER FIRST WEEKEND OUT!!!!!
We are so proud of Spirit and her agility partner, trainer and "Mom" Jann!!
It will be fun to see what this dynamo team can do in the future!!!
They are both huge stars in our eyes!!
